Ender Dragon

Behavior

The dragon "bathing" endermen with its acid breath attack.

The dragon has four main states of behavior:

The purple clouds emitted from the ender dragon`s breath attack can be collected in an empty bottle Bottle may refer to: Glass Bottle, crafted from glass. Water Bottle, a glass bottle filled with water. Bottle o Enchanting, yielding experience orbs when thrown. Potions that can be brewed, starting from a water bottle. to obtain Dragon`s Breath Dragon s Breath Type Raw materials Durability N/A Renewable Yes Stackable Yes (64) First appearances See history Data value dec: 437 hex: 1B5 bin: 110110101 Name dragon_breath See the item. For the block, see Fire. “ minecraft .

Whenever the dragon finds itself less than 10 blocks or greater than 150 blocks to its current target, it will attempt to choose a new target. When damaged it will target a point just behind itself, causing it to turn away and choose a new target.

The dragon is not hostile towards any other entities except the player. Be that as it may, other mobs may turn hostile to the ender dragon if struck. Any entities hit by the dragon`s wings will be dealt 5 () damage (10 () damage when hit by its head) and thrown into the air, sometimes to fatal heights or even off the island. Neither of these effects are applied for 12 second after the dragon takes damage.

If it takes fatal damage, the ender dragon will fly to within 10 blocks of the portal before actually dying, unless it is over 150 blocks away or inside blocks. When the dragon is respawned, a series of explosions resets the obsidian pillars, iron bars, and ender crystals.

The dragon can pass through all blocks, destroying most types. Blocks not destroyed are those that naturally generate on the central End island and those that are intended to be indestructible:

The green hitboxes of the Ender Dragon.

The ender dragon has a light purple health bar that appears at the top of the player`s screen. Its health is periodically healed by nearby ender crystals, indicated by a white beam connecting the dragon and the crystal. Destroying an ender crystal while the ender dragon is being healed by it will cause the ender dragon to take 10 () damage. The ender dragon can only take damage from explosions and player based damage. The ender dragon takes 14 normal damage when hit in any part that is not its head. The dragon does not take damage from snowballs, eggs, or other attacks that normally deal no damage. Suffocation cannot be used, as the ender dragon will destroy almost any block it comes into contact with and doesn`t take suffocation damage from blocks that it cannot destroy.

By using the F3+B shortcut, the dragon`s bounding box appears, though the dragon can not be damaged at just any spot in this large volume. Eight green hitboxes also appear, which indicate the locations on the dragon where it can be damaged: at the tail, body, head and wings.

Strategy

  • The 5⃗5 obsidian platform spawn point may not be directly connected to the center island of the End; as such, a bridge may need to be built. It is a good idea to bring scaffolding blocks to the End, particularly ones the Ender Dragon cannot destroy (e.g., obsidian and iron bars), so that the player can access the main island. The alternative is to bring
    Ender Pearl
    s. Once they have entered the End, it is crucial to destroy as many of the Ender Crystals as possible before going after the boss, preferably with a
    bow
    or
    Snowball
s, although it will be necessary to climb some of the towers to break Iron Bars around some of the crystals.
    • However, climbing the obsidian towers can be extremely dangerous as there is a high chance of falling off and dying, and even if the player does not fall off, the Ender Dragon will likely knock the player off anyway.
  • Afterwards, the player must defeat the actual Ender Dragon. A skilled bowman with a powerful bow can deal a lot of damage to the Ender Dragon; however, when the dragon is perched on the exit portal, it becomes necessary to use a sword.

Here are a few tips for fighting the Dragon:

  • Take anything to The End that could be possibly needed. The worst thing about The End is the potential to run out of resources and get stuck.
  • Wear a pumpkin in The End so that Endermen won`t₠attack, but beware that this reduces how much armor the player can have and severely impairs vision.
  • Pay attention to the Endermen as well as the Ender Dragon. The Enderman₠have just as much of a chance to kill the player as the Ender Dragon if a pumpkin isn`t being worn.
  • Never stay in one place. If timing movements accordingly, it is very hard for the Ender Dragon to score a hit.
  • Have enchanted weapons and armor. Enchanted bows and swords cause more significantly more damage to Endermen and the Ender Dragon, while enchanted armor offers more protection from damage.
  • If possible, fight the dragon as a group. Attempts to kill the Ender Dragon with just one person is considerably more difficult.
  • Hitting the head of the dragon deals the full damage of the weapon; hitting her anywhere else deals a quarter of the regular damage.
  • Look up as much as possible to limit attention received by Endermen if not wearing a pumpkin.
  • The only way out is death if there are no more resources.
  • Beds used in the End explode. Caution should be exherted in doing this, but exploding beds when the Ender Dragon is perched on the Exit Portal may be prudent.

Trivia

  • Ender Dragons spawned via commands in the End will have a health bar. Those spawned in the Nether or Overworld do not,
  • The "Outer End" can actually be reached without killing the dragon. It is about 1000 blocks away from the center island.
  • If, through modding/hacking/commands, the Ender Dragon is spawned in the Overworld, when killed, the portal that spawns under it will lead to The End. However, this is no longer the case as of the 1.9 Combat Update.
  • If the Ender Dragon flies into or over any Overworld blocks that the Player has placed, they will be destroyed without dropping anything. The only legitimate exception is Obsidian, which can be found in The End as well.
  • It is possible to get the wither to fight it, but the wither will deal close to no damage as the Ender Dragon does not take damage from status effects and/or mob attacks.
  • Ender Dragons can be used as somewhat inefficient tunnel borers or mining devices. If players mod their game, they can make the Ender Dragon destroy ores as drops to make things better.
  • If Ghasts are spawned in The End via Spawn Eggs or commands, their fireballs may hit the Ender Dragon, though the fireballs will cause little (if any) damage.
  • The Ender Dragon was the first boss to be released. Many speculate that the Giant was meant to be the first boss. However, this has never been confirmed.
  • The Ender Dragon cannot destroy entities, such as the Minecart.
  • There is an Ender Dragon Plush toy that was recently made available for the public.

    The Ender Dragon Plush

  • Notch made a Reddit post about the dragon, referring to it as a "she", and calling her Jean.
  • The Ender Dragon is able to fly past the world border and past the max terrain generation distance. See Far Lands.
  • The Ender Dragon is not the final boss, as the Wither comes after the Ender Dragon in the achievement set, and the Wither is considerably more challenging for some people.
  • In 1.9, the Ender Dragon can shoot Dragon`s Breath that works like Instant Damage combined with Knockback III, making it virtually impossible to kill.
  • There is a way to inflict good damage to the Ender dragon by placing a bed and waiting until the Ender dragon gets too close and gets damaged by the explosion of the bed.
    • There is rumor that someone killed the Ender Dragon with only 3 beds!

Trivia

  • Name tags cannot be used on an ender dragon.
  • The ender dragon`s hitbox is larger than the ender dragon itself, causing players to be pushed away from it.
  • If you kill a summoned dragon in the Overworld or Nether, it will not create a portal, nor an egg.
  • In spectator mode, you cannot view the perspective of the ender dragon, unlike any other mob.
  • Using F3+b to show hitboxes reveals that the ender dragon`s head rotation faces in the opposite direction to that which its real head faces. This is also why the ender dragon faces the wrong way when set in a monster spawner.
  • Ender dragons, when spawned in the Overworld, will fly to coordinates x=0 and z=0 and dive at the ground.
  • From 1.9 onwards, Ender dragons, when spawned with /summon, will look down, become invulnerable and stay stationary.

Notch-related

  • On Reddit, Notch referred to the ender dragon as a she, and suggested her name to be "Jean?" in the same manner he called the Player "Steve?".
    • Dinnerbone later stated that he thinks the name is officially "Jean?"
    • The Xbox avatar item `Ender Dragon Pet` has the description `A cuter, friendlier version of his bigger, less playful Minecraft sister.`- revealing that the ender dragon is female.
  • Before it was textured, Notch reported that he was afraid to texture it as it was a complicated model. In the end, the dragon model was so complex Notch stated that he gave up making the texture manually and wrote a texture packer tool to aid him in adding the texture to the model. Notch also uploaded the code for the tool so others could use the pack.

    Overview

Since Beta 1.9 pre-release 6, a single Ender Dragon appears in each world`s End, and can be fought and killed. She swoops at the player, destroying any blocks she passes through, except Obsidian, indestructible blocks (such as Bedrock), Iron Bars, and End Stone. Once an Ender Dragon is killed, an End Gateway appears in the vicinity, with a dragon egg on top. The end gateway leads to the "Outer End".

Upon defeat, the Ender Dragon performs an exploding animation and drops around 12,000 Experience Orbs (which take a player with no experience to around level 78), activates the Exit Portal, and spawns a dragon egg on top of the portal frame.

When one Ender Crystal is placed on each edge of the exit portal⃢₀ₔfor a total of 4⃢₀ₔthen the dragon will respawn; however, when defeated, she drops a lot less experience and no dragon egg.

    Appearance

The Ender Dragon is a large, black dragon with glowing purple eyes. She is the third-largest mob in the game; only the unimplemented giant and the ghast is larger. She has a few dark gray features, such as the wings, and various other parts of her body. Similar to the eyes of endermen and Spiders, the Ender Dragon`s eyes are visible through darkness, so the player can see her coming from anywhere in The End.

    Behavior

Ender Dragons attack by charging at the player`s lower waist, with their wings tucked in and diving downward. If hit with anything while swooping towards the player, even a fist, she will turn around and fly away. Ender Crystals that sit on top of the Obsidian Towers will heal her. The Ender Dragon flies around the sky and shoots purple fire charges (Ender Acid). After a while, she will go down and hover above the inactive End Portal while constantly spraying Ender Acid out of her mouth similar to how a dragon breathes fire when attacking.

    Bugs

    • There is a very rare glitch where dying during the fight and returning to The End causes multiple Ender Dragons to spawn ( up to 6 have been known to appear), and in order to finish the game and reach the end credits, they must all be defeated one by one by one.
    • If the game is saved just as the death animation starts, then reload the world, the Ender Dragon will be curled up in a ball and spinning, instead of the light show displaying.
    • When the Ender Dragon is killed, multiple portals may appear.
